Building the Nighthawks Scene

At the end of my Undergrad in Multimedia we had to do a large group project of our own choosing. Together with four friends I decided to do a short, multi-strand film called Torpid. The film was an installation shown as a triptych across three screens that also allowed the user to choose the final outcome. We wrote the script, shot the film, did all the post-production and also scored the film.
Edward Hopper was my inspiration for one of the endings in Torpid. I used his paintings as the basis for a lot of my scenes and and in some cases I attempted to recreate the painting and place the characters within it. His most famous work, Nighthawks, was one that I really wanted to integrate into the piece. Here are two videos which show how I went about the process. First I built the scene in Illustrator before importing it into After Effects. Here I added in the characters who had been filmed on a green screen. After this I then exported the clip as single frames and did a batch process in Photoshop to get the same effect on every frame. I then used After Effects to recompile them into a video clip again and hey presto!
