Freddy Fyffes is the face of Fyffes snack sized bananas. These come in packs of 7 and are perfect for children’s lunchboxes. Freddy has been around for years and years but recently we were asked to come up with a new design for Freddy (I’ll do a separate post on that) and also a new packaging design.
We investigated loads of different packaging options from nets, to sleeves to wraps and other ways of tying the bunches together. However, with a lot of these solutions we found that there was a risk of scoring or damaging the banana. They could also affect the ripening process. This was a big problem for us as Fyffes pride themselves on delivering the best bananas to their customers.
We also had to consider the fact that the bananas don’t always come in a hand (the technical term) of 7. Sometimes it’s 2 + 5 and sometimes it’s 3 + 4. In the end a return to the bag was the best option for us. However, we wanted to keep some of the design elements we’d been working on previously.
We worked together with Chris, a designer in Huskies to find a design that would translate well when printed and also show off our new Freddy design. We also needed to show a certain amount of the product so the design couldn’t be too busy and needed to be faithful to the Fyffes brand.
After a lot of trial and error and working back and forth with the printer to try out a few samples we settled on our final design. The chosen design contrasts well with the product and stands out from others on the shelf. It also features our favourite iteration of Freddy, showing him positive and excited. We also used the packaging to tell people about the story of Fyffes, how their bananas are grown and also some health benefits of the product itself.

Thanks to Michael Whelan and Chris Flynn for their work on this project.
